Candles have been around for ages for their utility and symbolic meaning. The use of candles has changed over the decades and with the advance in technology, due to inverters and charged batteries, candles are no more limited to only lighting the homes during power cuts. So they have gone from becoming items of necessity to items of beauty and decoration.
Today candle making has become a vocation and a popular hobby. It is quite the ‘in’ thing today to decorate homes with different kinds of candles in various shapes and sizes, scented and glittered. The kinds of candles available in the market are amazing and irresistible.
Candles come in different shapes and sizes – some are round, square, conical, etc. They are also set in different moulds like goblets, various geometrical shapes and the same can be scented too. The scented candles can soothe and please the senses creating a romantic or spiritual aura in the room depending on the occasion. Glitter powder of different colors is also added to make the candles more attractive.
Pillar candles, as the name suggests, are huge and do not need candle holders or stands but are placed in the corners of rooms or halls. They are beautifully colored and can be placed in soup plates, large or small. These candles should be placed at least three to five inches apart to avoid accidents or prevent them from melting each other due to the heat. They can create a dramatic ambience in huge halls and break the monotony of huge flower arrangements or artifacts placed at strategic points.
Candles are used to make decorative centerpieces on the dining tables. Long, conical ones set in a flower arrangement give an elegant appearance albeit for such centerpieces, it is preferable to use the non-drip ones or scented and smokeless ones.
Tea candles can be placed on side tables, mantles or sills. Floating candles can be placed in a pool while having outdoor parties to give a dramatic effect. Gone are the days when candles were used only for their light or as offering in a house of worship.
It's all very well to decorate our homes with candles and create a soft, glowing atmosphere. But above all comes safety as it's certainly not advisable 'to play with fire'. We have to be extra cautious with candles placed in children's rooms. We must avoid burning candles in a poorly ventilated room especially away from doors and windows with curtains as a little spark can start a fire and cause a fatal accident.
